Question:
I've entered the number of children for the "Federal Child Amount" (FCA) credit but the "OK" button is still grayed out and I can't close the window.  What do I do?
Answer:
Once you have entered the appropriate number of children you must press the "Tab" key on your keyboard to register the input.  You may then click the "OK" button to close the window and continue.  If you don't want to claim the credit for that party, enter zero and press the "Tab" key to continue.  Details on the "Federal Child Amount" and other important tax credits may be found in Chapter 11 of the ChildView® Reference Manual (2nd Edition).

Question:
The instructions for installing a "complete"  ChildView® version (as opposed to an "update") say that my previous version must be uninstalled first.  Will I lose my saved ChildView® data files when I uninstall?
Answer:
Uninstall the ChildView® program using the "Add/Remove Programs" feature under the Windows® control panel.  When you use this feature, only files that have been installed through the ChildView® installation process will be removed.   Your data files will not be affected as they have been created in ChildView® but not installed by ChildView®.

Question:
The instructions for installing a "complete"  ChildView® version (as opposed to an "update") say that my previous version must be uninstalled first.  Do I really have to?
Answer:
Yes.  If you do not uninstall the previous version first, certain necessary files may not be overwritten by the installation process and the program may not work properly.

Question:
Does ChildView® include the 1997 Federal Child Support Guideline tables, as well as the tables that came into force May 1, 2006?
Answer:
Absolutely!  ChildView® version 2006.1.0 onward includes the May 1, 2006 Federal Child Support Guideline tables, which are  used as the default in the child support calculations.   However, you may still access the May 1, 1997 tables for retroactive support calculations through ChildView®'s "Quick Table Lookup" function.

Question:
Does ChildView® have a calculator to address the formulas discussed in the paper "Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines: A Draft Proposal"?
Answer:
Absolutely!  ChildView® version 2005.1.0 onward includes a new calculator called the "Spousal Support Advisory Guideline Calculator."  This tool is fully integrated into the existing  ChildView® program at no additional cost to you.  It is found under the "Spousal Support Analysis Menu" after you "Calculate Everything."

Question:
I've compared the results of other calculation software to
ChildView® and obtained different results.  Why?
Answer:

All the calculations done by the ChildView® software, with the exception of the Child Support Guideline table look up, are time sensitive.  ChildView® uses the most current information at the time of a specific version release.  For example, version 2006.2.0 incorporates all the federal, provincial and territorial income tax changes that are effective for July 1, 2006.  This includes not only the standard changes due to indexation but also the relevant changes that have been announced in the federal, provincial and territorial budgets prior to the version release date.  Changes announced after a version release date are incorporated into the next release, the timing of which will depend on the magnitude of the changes.  Because ChildView® issues regular updates, mid-year tax changes are addressed in a timely manner.  At the very least updates are issued in the early spring to incorporate CPP, EI and  income tax changes, and in early summer to incorporate the benefits changes (CTB, GST and provincial / territorial programs).

Benefits programs are administered by governments on a July to June cycle, not on the calendar year cycle of income tax.
ChildView®'s summer update includes the benefits changes that are effective July 1 of that year.

While
ChildView® cannot comment on what other calculators may or may not be doing, if you require verification of specific numbers, we are happy to provide you with complete details of the calculations.

Question:
I have told my ChildView® icon to "Start in..." a specific folder but when I click "Open Saved Files" or the "Save File" buttons in ChildView® it opens to "My Documents."  Why?
Answer:
If your operating system is Windows® 98, the system seems to default to "My Documents" and will not recognize any other alternative.  For convenience, you may want to move your ChildView® data or data folder to this location.  If your operating system is Windows® XP or Vista, it will open to "My Documents" initially and thereafter open to the last place that you accessed your ChildView® files from.

Question:
How do I set the "Save File" or "Open Save File" default path in ChildView®?
Answer:
The answer will depend on the operating system you are using.  In Windows® 98 the path will go to "My Documents" and it appears that this can not be changed at this time.  In Windows® 2000 it will go to the path you have specified as the "Start in..." on your ChildView® icon.  In Windows® XP and Vista it will initially start in "My Documents" but once you have saved or opened a ChildView® file from another location it will retain the last location you used.

Question:
Will my new version of ChildView® open my old files?
Answer:
Yes.  All new versions of ChildView®  will open all valid  ChildView® data files.

Question:
My computer crashed and I have to reinstall my
ChildView® program.  What do I need?
Answer:

You need to install your most recent full (ie: "Complete") version (CD or email) and the latest update and / or license extension (if applicable).   You do not need to install any of the older updates as the update file is cumulative (but the license extension may not be).  Check the "Home" page of our website for the most current version.

Question:
I've just installed the latest update and am receiving the error message "Can't find Guidelne.06" when I calculate.  What do I do?
Answer:
Likely the update has not been installed in the same directory as the full version.  Determine which directory the full version has been installed in and reinstall the update in that directory.  If the full version has not been installed at all, you must install the full version in the same directory as you have installed the update.

Question:
When I try to open  ChildView® I receive a message saying "This version of ChildView® has expired."  What do I do?
Answer:
Install the latest update, version, or license extension.  If you can not find the latest update, version, or license extension please call our support line.  The number of the latest version is always posted on the "Home" page of our website in the banner.  If you are installing a "complete" version (such as 2008.1.0) you will have to create a new icon for your desktop or change the path of your old icon to point to the path of the new program.

Question:
How can I tell the difference between the full version and an update?
Answer:
Full versions are now labeled as "Complete."   Updates will specifically say "update" on the label and will require the complete version to be installed prior to, and in the same directory as, any update.

Note that as of January 2004 updates are shipped on CD by default.  If you prefer e-mail  please let us know.  To receive the program via e-mail, you must have the appropriate security settings in your e-mail account.

Question:
I am trying to install the program and am getting the error message "Can't create output file."  What do I do?

Answer:

This message means that either you have a version of the program open already or your computer thinks that you do.  The simplest solution is to close all programs, reboot your machine, and run the install function again.  This will clear out any residual things left in the computer's memory.

Question:
I installed the most recent update but when I open the program it is still the previous version.  What do I do?

Answer:

Most likely the update has not been installed in the same directory as the full version.  Determine the file path of the full version and reinstall or move the update to that directory.

Question:
I installed the most recent update but the name of the icon on my desktop still refers to the previous version.  What do I do?

Answer:

The desktop icon is not updated by the update installation process.  If you wish to rename your icon simply right mouse click on the icon name, choose rename from the pop up menu and type in what you would like to call it.

Question:
How do I tell what version of the
ChildView® program I am running?
Answer:

The version number appears on the opening window of the program as well as on the main menu of the program.  It is also on the outside package and the label of the CD you received.  It will always be in the format of "four digit year, dot major release number, dot minor release number."  For example, the first new release of 2008 is version number 2008.1.0.  Please refer to Technical Bulletin #2006-1 in the ChildView® Reference Manual for more detail.

Question:
I am trying to save the file but the program won't accept it.  What do I do?

Answer:

ChildView® version 2004.1.0 and higher will accept long file names (up to 256 characters).  Ensure that you are using the current version and have no unacceptable characters in it, such as forward slashes.  If you are still having a problem please call our support line at 1-800-787-8620.

Question:
I want to calculate various levels of spousal support only.  The parties have no children.  Can I do this in ChildView®?
Answer:

Yes!  The "Spousal Support Advisory Guideline Calculator" and the "Spousal Support Analyzer" are found at the end of the program and use the data from the main menu input screens to determine the range of spousal support under the advisory guidelines and the tax consequences of  various levels of spousal support.  Enter all the relevant information for your parties (personal information, income and expense details etc.) in the input screens and then calculate the result.  On the summary screen, click on the button in the top right hand corner entitled "Spousal Support Analysis Menu" to access all our spousal support tools.

Choose the  "Spousal Support Advisory Guideline Calculator" to determine the range of spousal support suggested by the advisory guidelines or click "Spousal Analyzer" to analyze the impact of various levels of spousal support.  If you choose to use the advisory guidelines calculator first, you may access the "Spousal Analyzer" directly from that window.  If you wish to determine a corresponding lump-sum amount then click on the "Lump Sum Payment Calculator."  For more details on these tools, please refer to Chapter 4 of the ChildView® Reference Manual .  You may also refer to the "Quick Tips - SSAG" leaflet for a quick summary on the use of the "Spousal Support Advisory Guideline Calculator."
